Anselm of Laon

Anselm of Laon
(d. 1117)
   Theologian and Educator.
Although there is little evidence, it has been suggested that Anselm of Laon was a pupil of St anselm at the monastery school of Bec. His later life was spent in the Cathedral School of Laon where he attracted many pupils and where he was known as the ‘Doctor Scholasticus’. Among his students were Peter abelard and gilbert de la porrée. After his death, his lectures on the Books of the Bible were expanded and systematised. He was not an innovative theologian, but his method of imparting and elucidating biblical texts was revolutionary. He used to set up opposing views and then proceed to reconcile them. This procedure was used with great effect by many later authorities, including Abelard himself in his Sic et Non.
